Google Makes School Search Access Contingent on AI
Google’s school search policy draws backlash as Apple tightens AI companion rules, Binance details a massive hack, and ChatGPT reports growing search use.

Google is changing how schools access Search, requiring institutions that want to keep the service to accept AI features built into it. The move arrives alongside Apple’s new age restrictions for AI companions, Binance’s account of a multibillion-dollar theft involving compromised engineers’ devices, and OpenAI’s claim that ChatGPT search volume has reached roughly one-fifth of Google’s. Apple also opened new always-on audio tools for its latest watches, while a report says Nvidia is asking cloud clients to reduce business tied to Chinese customers.
Google Links School Search to Its AI Features
Google says schools will have more control over Gemini, but the company’s revised arrangement reportedly leaves a sharper choice for institutions that do not want AI in the school environment: keep access to Google Search and accept AI features built into it, or turn off Search as well. Bloomberg reports that schools wanting Search for K–12 students will soon have to turn it on themselves, with the AI features included. Critics, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, accuse Google of pressuring schools to use AI, according to CBS News.
Binance Describes a Long-Running $6.3 Billion Heist
Binance says attackers spent months targeting its engineers through fake job interviews, compromised software, and an internal AI tool. The company’s postmortem, as summarized by The New York Times, said hackers used a computer and an internal AI tool to take control of machines belonging to two engineers on the exchange’s wallet team. Axios reports that Binance attributed the campaign to apparent North Korean activity and said it had detected and prevented 57 suspected North Korea-linked incidents in 2026. The attribution and the full mechanics remain based on Binance’s account.
Apple Raises the Minimum Age for Some AI Companions
Apple’s App Store rules will require dating apps and AI companions offering sexual or romantic content to carry an 18+ rating, according to TechCrunch. The changes are scheduled to take effect on November 16, with developers required to submit content descriptors by January 12, 2027, according to the Times of India. The policy could affect a broad set of companion applications distributed through Apple’s store.
OpenAI Puts ChatGPT Search at One-Fifth of Google’s Volume
OpenAI says ChatGPT now handles search-like queries at roughly 20% of Google’s volume. Adam Fry, ChatGPT’s consumer product lead, gave the figure at a press event, but he did not specify the source of Google’s comparison number, The Verge notes. OpenAI defines a search as an input that results in a web search rather than tasks such as a simple definition or how-to explanation. The claim indicates substantial use, but it is a company-provided comparison rather than an independently verified market-share measure.
Apple Tests Always-On Audio Tools on the Watch
Apple has begun testing two AI-powered audio features, Live Rewind and Siri Recap, in the watchOS 27.3 developer beta. Live Rewind shows a transcript of the previous 15 seconds, while Siri Recap provides high-level summaries of conversations, The Verge reports. The features are available on Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4, according to Forbes, so their capabilities and reliability are still being evaluated in beta.
Report Says Nvidia Is Limiting Cloud Exposure to China
Nvidia has instructed some cloud-computing clients to reduce their exposure to Chinese companies, Bloomberg reports, citing the Financial Times and unidentified people. A separate Tom’s Hardware account describes an alleged policy under which Chinese business would be limited to less than half of a provider’s total. The reports do not include a public Nvidia announcement, so the scope and terms remain unconfirmed.
Details Still to Be Clarified
Google’s school policy will face scrutiny from administrators deciding whether Search’s utility justifies bundled AI features. Apple’s companion rules and watchOS beta will show how far the company intends to go on age controls and ambient audio. Binance’s attribution, OpenAI’s search comparison, and the reported Nvidia restrictions also warrant closer examination as more primary details emerge.
